Arugula | Testosterone from your vegetable garden

At the time of writing this piece, it is mid-September. If you have a balcony, garden or greenhouse, you still have about a month to sow arugula - scientific name: Eruca sativa. The leaves of this peppery leafy vegetable increase testosterone levels, according to an animal study from Iraq.

Study
In 2013, Zena Hussein published an animal study in the Journal of Al-Nahrain University in which she divided 24 lab mice into 3 groups of equal size. The mice in the control group received standard chow, the mice in the other two groups also received extracts from the leaves of arugula in addition to their feed.

Hussein gave her test animals in the experimental groups a lower and a higher dose of extract every day for 5 weeks. If the mice in the low dose group had been adult humans, they would have consumed approximately 180-270 milligrams of extract daily. The human equivalent of the higher dose is 30 percent higher.

Hussein made her extracts herself. You can see how exactly below.

Hussein's extracts were water-based. We suspect that it is possible for men to consume active substances through regular arugula to increase their testosterone levels, but we dare not give a concrete estimate of the precise amount required for this.

Results
Supplementation increased the concentration of testosterone in the mice's blood by 30 percent.

At the same time, arugula improved the quality of their sperm cells. In the supplementation groups, the sperm cells became more mobile. Moreover, the percentage of dead and deformed sperm cells decreased in these groups.

About enokitake, testosterone and copious amounts of adenosine
Mushrooms such as reishi and cordyceps can increase testosterone levels. This also applies to enokitake, an edible mushroom that can be found on the shelves of your local supermarket.

Alpinia galanga, a kitchen spice that increases testosterone levels
Laos powder, found in every supermarket, is made from the roots of the Asian plant Alpinia galanga. This plant is related to ginger and turmeric.

Cordycepin from Cordyceps militaris rejuvenates testes
In Asia, but increasingly also in Western countries, men use supplements with extracts from the mushrooms Cordyceps sinensis and Cordyceps militaris. These products should increase the production of testosterone.
