How Tamarindus indica seeds may increase testosterone levels in men
The fruits of the East African tree tamarind, which biologists prefer to call Tamarindus indica, form the basis of Worcestershire sauce. According to Canadian researchers, the seeds of these fruits can increase testosterone levels. They've even already figured out pretty exactly how.
Sponsored as hell
However, the researchers had not devised and carried out the experiments. That was done by the CEO of RPS Biologiques, [rpsbiologiques.com] a company that produces extracts for the supplement industry.
RPS Biologiques co-financed the research.
Study
Traditional healers use extracts of Tamarindus indica against endocrinological disorders, including those caused by obesity and type-2 diabetes. A reduced production of testosterone is one such abnormality. The researchers wanted to know whether Tamarindus indica can alleviate this hormonal disorder.
If the mice had been adult humans, they would have received 300-500 milligrams of Tamarindus indica seed per day. The experiment lasted 10 weeks.
Results
However, after 10 weeks of administration, the testosterone-enhancing effect had disappeared. The testosterone-boosting properties of tamarind apparently fade after 5 weeks.
Mechanism
Star, Cyp11a1, Hsd3b1, Cyp17a1, and Hsd17b3 are involved in the biosynthesis of steroid hormones such as DHEA, progesterone and testosterone from cholesterol.
