Rutin | A natural mood booster that lowers blood pressure
In laboratory animals, rutin, a metabolite of quercetin found in large amounts in vegetables, fruits and herbs, is a mental stimulant in the right dose. [Eur J Pharmacol. 2008 Jun 10;587(1-3):163-8.]
In humans too, according to a trial that appeared in Frontiers in Nutrition in 2023. According to this trial, rutin also lowers blood pressure.
Study
Researchers from the Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences in Iran divided 59 people with type 2 diabetes into 2 groups. For 3 months, the subjects in one group took a placebo every day after a meal, while the subjects in the other group took 500 milligrams of rutin after a meal daily.
The abstract states that the subjects took 1 gram of rutin. That is not true.
The test subjects did not use insulin.
Results
Rutin supplementation reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure by 4 and 9 points, respectively. The illegible table below tells us that. It takes on a more manageable shape if you click on it.
Even more striking was the effect of rutin supplementation on subjective factors such as the impact of emotions on daily functioning, feelings of energy and mental health.
Expressed on a scale of 0-10, before the supplementation started, the test subjects had given these factors a score of 4, 5 and 5 respectively. At the end of the supplementation period, the subjects gave scores of 7, 7 and 6.
Mechanism
A possible explanation can be found in the table below. Rutin increased activity of the endogenous antioxidant superoxide dismutase [SOD]. This enzyme neutralizes aggressive molecules.
