Rutin | Perhaps the most effective covid inhibitor in propolis

Supplementation with Brazilian propolis has a positive effect on Covid-19, we recently wrote. The main active substance in propolis is probably rutin, Turkish scientists discovered. That is interesting. Dirt-cheap supplements with hefty doses of rutin are on the shelves of every vitamin store.

Analysis
Turkish molecular biologists, affiliated with Karadeniz Technical University, published a study in 2021 in which they used computer models to look for the main antiviral components of propolis.

In the first phase of their research, they analyzed which bioactive substances were contained in propolis using HPLC-UV.

You can see the result below. Click on the figure for a larger version.

The most common bioactive substances in propolis are chrysin, followed closely by myricetin and pinocembrin. Rutin is in fourth place.

In silico study
The researchers then simulated in a computer model how the bioactive substances in propolis interact with the ACE-2 receptor on the outside of human cells. The coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 enters cells via that receptor. Blockade of the ACE-2 receptor therefore inhibits the virus.

To block a receptor, a molecule must be able to stick to that receptor. The greater the adhesive force, the greater the blocking effect. You measure this adhesive force, among other things, by calculating the Ki (way too simplistic, we are fully aware of it). The lower the Ki, the greater the adhesion between receptor and molecule.

You can see in the table below that of all the components of propolis, rutin has the greatest adhesive power. Click on it for a larger version. The figure below shows how, according to the researchers' model, rutin sticks to the ACE-2 receptor.

Conclusion
"This study shows that the high binding constants for the ACE-II receptors of favanones in the ethanolic propolis extract make it a good competitive inhibitor and protective natural agents for the treatment of COVID-19", write the researchers.

"With the best binding affinity for ACE-II, rutin has the potential to compete with COVID-19 for ACE-II."

"However, this study should be supported with further in vivo studies and clinical trials."

More coming soon.
