Collagen improves brain function and learning processes in people over 50
If people in their fifties and sixties take 5 grams of collagen daily, they may improve linguistic learning processes and the way tissues in their brains function. This is suggested by a pilot study that appeared in Nutrients.
Study
The R&D department of the Japanese Nitta Gelatin gave 30 employees of that company 5 grams of collagen daily for 4 weeks. The test subjects were 49-63 years old and the supplement was a hydrolyzate of - you guessed it coming - produced by Nitta Gelatin.
Before and just after the 4-week period, the Nitta Gelatin researchers made scans of the test subjects' brains. They also tested the functioning of their memory with two tests.
Results
According to the scans, the mass of the brain [GM-BHQ] did not change. However, the fractional anisotropy [FA-BHQ] increased. This means that water molecules move less chaotically through the brain. That is an indication that the brain tissues are functioning properly.
The scores on FA-BHQ lie between 0 and 1. When the FA-BHQ is 0, the brain has literally turned into an aquarium without fish and aquatic plants. The quality of thought processes of such brains is usually suboptimal.

Scores on both tests improved. This was especially the case with the scores on the standard verbal paired associate learning test [S-PA]. In this test, study participants must learn to connect words and then remember the connections.
The increase in fractional anisotropy and the increase in scores on the standard verbal paired associate learning test were related. The bigger one, the bigger the other.
