Collagen hydrolyzate as a skin rejuvenator | The most effective dose is surprisingly low

Hydrolyzed collagen is a proven cosmeceutical. When it comes to products that keep skin young and healthy, collagen is perhaps the most thoroughly studied supplement. Moreover, according to a Japanese animal study, the effective dose is surprisingly low.

Collagen hydrolyzate as a skin rejuvenator | The most effective dose is surprisingly low

Study
In 2016, Japanese protein chemists at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology published an animal study in Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry in which they exposed hairless mice to increasingly powerful ultraviolet light for a month. Some of the test animals were also given a relatively low, a high and a particularly high dose of collagen hydrolyzate via their drinking water.

Mice in a control group were not irradiated but also did not receive collagen hydrolyzate. Animals in yet another control group were irradiated, but also did not receive collagen hydrolyzate.

Exposure to high doses of ultraviolet light accelerates skin aging. Substances that keep the skin healthy during exposure to powerful ultraviolet light are also likely to protect against skin aging.

Results
When the month was over, the researchers determined how much water was present in the outer layer [corneum] of the mice's skin. Skin affected by ultraviolet light becomes drier. As you can see below, all doses of collagen hydrolyzate prevented skin dehydration.

Damaged skin cannot properly prevent the loss of water from the body. When the skin is damaged, transepidermal water loss [TEWL] increases. The figure above shows that collagen hydrolyzate in the most modest doses protected against this - and the higher doses did not.

According to the Japanese, the human equivalent of the most effective dose of collagen hydrolyzate, for someone weighing 60 kilos, is 1.2 grams per day.

Q10 combats wrinkles Rosehips rejuvenate skin Into sunbathing? Fish oil protects your skin

Q10 combats wrinkles
A daily dose of 50 mg Q10 is enough.

Rosehips rejuvenate skin
A couple of tablespoons of rosehip powder daily make the skin more elastic and less dry, and wrinkles less visible.

Into sunbathing? Fish oil protects your skin
The more fish fatty acids in your diet, the less quickly you are likely to get sunburn. Fish oil may retard the speed at which your skin ages.
