The antidiabetic effect of glucosamine
Glucosamine has a modest but clinically relevant protective effect against diabetes type-2. Supplementation not only reduces the chance that you will get diabetes, but also protects against cardiovascular complications if you already have diabetes.
Study 1
Supplementation with glucosamine reduced the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 17 percent, the researchers found, after statistically accounting for all other influencing factors.

The researchers also knew whether the study participants carried genetic variants that increased the risk of diabetes. In all groups, glucosamine offered protection against type 2 diabetes.
Study 2
When the study began, diabetes had not yet damaged the participants' blood vessels. The researchers found that glucosamine supplementation reduced the risk of microvascular complications by 11 percent.
For the study participants in the Biobank study, the exact amount of glucosamine they used is unknown. The duration of use and the type of supplement were also not recorded.
