Glucosamine users are less likely to get cancer
Taking glucosamine supplements reduces your risk of cancer. This was discovered by Chinese researchers who analyzed British data. According to their study, glucosamine especially protects people over sixty and people with a healthy body weight.
Studie
Chinese researchers at Central South University used data from 453,645 Britons collected in the UK Biobank project. When they were recruited during the period 2006-2010, the study participants were 38-73 years old and free of cancer.
The researchers followed the study participants until 2021. Overall, the researchers could therefore follow the participants for 12 years.
During this period, 9,366 study participants died of cancer.
19.4 percent of study participants used glucosamine. The researchers looked at whether they could find a link between the risk of dying from cancer and the use of glucosamine.
Results
The use of glucosamine reduced the risk of death from cancer in general, but the effect was not strong. More convincing was the effect on three specific types of cancer - kidney cancer, lung cancer and rectal cancer. You probably already knew that glucosamine may have a positive effect on lung cancer.
Before the researchers made the figure below, they filtered out the effect of factors such as age, gender, ethnicity, income, body weight, physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption, intake of vegetables, fruit and meat, and the use of supplements and non-steroid anti-inflammatories.
When the researchers broke down their data, they found that glucosamine reduced the risk of dying from cancer, particularly in people over the age of 60 and people of a healthy weight.
Conclusion
"Further pharmacological studies are needed to increase our understanding of the potential benefits of glucosamine", write the researchers.
