Vitamin D supplement reduces flu risk, says meta-study

There is so much fuss about corona that the old-fashioned flu no longer seems to exist. Maybe the situation will return to normal one day, and hospitals will just be full of flu patients every winter. Just like before. And if it comes to that, then thanks to a Chinese meta-study we will already know what we can do about it. We just need to boost the collective vitamin D level. Just like with corona.

Study
Epidemiologists from Zhejiang University found ten previously published and well-conducted trials in the scientific literature, aggregated the results and re-analyzed them.

In the trials, researchers had experimented with vitamin D supplementation on a total of 4859 subjects.

The duration of supplementation ranged from 1-18 months, the daily dose ranged from 500-6800 units. In a number of studies, the researchers gave their subjects a hefty dose of tens of thousands of units per week, or even hundreds of thousands of units per month.

Results
For most trials, the results suggested that vitamin D could prevent flu, but no more than that. However, the results of all trials together were more telling in that regard. Together they showed that vitamin D supplementation reduced the risk of influenza by 22 percent.

The researchers found no evidence of bias, the figure above shows. So it does not appear that only studies with good results have been published, and studies with less favorable results are gathering dust unpublished in a desk drawer.

Conclusion
"Strategies for preventing influenza can be optimized by vitamin D supplementation", write the researchers.

Quercetin sabotages influenza virus
In test tubes, quercetin, a flavonoid found in many plant foods, makes it difficult for influenza A viruses to infect cells.

Animal study: spirulina is a virus inhibitor
Of course, extrapolating an animal study to humans is risky. Against the background of alarming reports about the covid-19 outbreak, we nevertheless read this study with above-average interest.
