Vitamin D3 supplement keeps elderly covid-19 patient alive
It could just be that the umpteenth covid wave will sweep across the Northern half of the world in a month. A promising strategy that reduces the risk of death from infection by SARS-Cov2 is vitamin D3 supplementation. This also applies to people over eighty.
Study
French researchers, affiliated with the University of Angers, followed 95 covid patients who entered the geriatric clinic of a teaching hospital in 2020 for 3 months. The mean age of the study participants was 88 years.
67 patients took vitamin D3 supplements. They took a dose of 50000 IU monthly, or 80.00, 100000 or 200000 IU every 2-3 months. One patients took 800 IU of vitamin D3 daily.
The other 28 patients did not take vitamin D3.
Results
After the researchers adjusted for the effect of as many other factors as possible, the chance of death in the supplementation group was 77 percent smaller than in the group that did not take vitamin D.
Conclusion
"Vitamin D supplementation may represent an effective, accessible, and well-tolerated adjuvant treatment for COVID-19", summarize the researchers.
