Vitamin D supplement keeps type 2 diabetes at bay
If you are prediabetic, you may benefit from vitamin D3 supplementation. You can deduce that from a small and by no means perfect human study that Greek doctors recently published in the Expert Review of Clinical Pharmacology.
Study
Half of the subjects received advice about a healthy way of life. They were told to walk for half an hour every day, lose some weight and eat healthier. This was the control group.
The other half of the subjects received the same advice, and also received a weekly supplement containing 20,000 IU of vitamin D3. The subjects' vitamin D status was poor. When the study started, no subjects in the supplementation group had an adequate status. When the study was over, about half of the subjects in the supplementation group had vitamin D levels that make endocrinologists happy.
Half of the subjects received advice about a healthy way of life. They were told to walk for half an hour every day, lose some weight and eat healthier. This was the control group.
The subjects in the control group did not receive a placebo.
The study lasted a year.
Results
However, in the group that received a supplement with vitamin D3 in addition to advice, the researchers did see something happen. Vitamin D supplementation increased vitamin D levels. In addition, supplementation lowered the concentration of glycated hemoglobin [HbA1c] in the blood. The more HbA1c there is in your blood, the higher your glucose level has been in recent weeks.
Vitamin D supplementation also lowered the concentration of glucose in the blood that the researchers measured early in the morning [FPG]. The lower this level, the better your body can handle glucose.
Conclusion
"Taking into account the low cost, the good safety profile, and its pleiotropic actions, vitamin D could be considered to be complimentary to a strategy of changes in lifestyle for the management of prediabetes in this population."
"However, studies with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up need to confirm our findings and determine specific aspects of the optimal supplementation strategy, including the ideal target population, dosage, duration, and form of administered vitamin D."
