Study
Endocrinologists from Fortis-C-DOC Center of Excellence for Diabetes, Metabolic Diseases and Endocrinology in New Delhi, India experimented for 16 weeks with 116 rather unhealthy adult subjects. The test subjects were overweight, had high glucose levels, high blood pressure and impaired cholesterol levels.

All subjects were given information about healthy food and exercise, which they actually used to improve their lifestyle.

Half of the subjects took two capsules three times a day, with each meal, each containing half a gram of cinnamon - with Cinnamonum zeylanicum, to be precise. The subjects therefore took one gram of cinnamon with each meal, and 3 grams daily. The other half of the subjects used a placebo.

According to fundamental research, cinnamon can positively change glucose metabolism through multiple mechanisms. Phenolic phytochemicals in cinnamon inhibit enzymes that convert starch into carbohydrates and enhance the action of insulin and the insulin receptor.

Results
In the placebo group, blood pressure [SBP] [DBP], waist circumference [WC] and fasting glucose level [FBG] improved, but those improvements were more significant in the group taking Cinnamonum zeylanicum supplements.

Cinnamon supplementation also caused a significant increase in HDL levels. This was a scientific novelty.

Conclusion
"In this 16 weeks study, we show significant decrease in measures of glycemia, adiposity including abdominal obesity, lipids, blood pressure and major decrease in percentage of individuals having metabolic syndrome with single nutrient intervention of cinnamon", the researchers write.

"While the results of this investigation are promising, they should be tested in a larger sample over longer period of time."
