5 drops of pomegranate seed oil stops mental decline in over 65s
People over 65 who are still functioning well, but notice that they are starting to forget things can stop their cognitive decline for at least a year - if they take a supplement with oil from the seeds of the pomegranate. Greek researchers report this in Biology.
Study
The researchers divided the subjects into a control group and a supplementation group. The control group received no supplements or placebo.
The subjects in the supplementation group took 5 drops of oil pressed from the seeds of the pomegranate daily for 12 years. The oil was produced by the Greek company Rodi Hellas. Incidentally, that Rodi Hellas did not fund the study.
The oil consisted of 70-85 percent of the polyunsaturated fatty acid punicic acid. [J Alzheimers Dis. 2024;97(4):1961-70.] Some nutritionists refer to fatty acids as punicic acid as omega-5 fatty acids.
The improvement in MMSE scores in the supplementation group is not clinically significant. That does not mean that stopping the mental decline is not relevant. Especially if the agent that causes this stopping is as cheap and safe as pomegranate oil. In the control group, the average MMSE score decreased by 0.39 points. This slight decrease in cognitive abilities is normal in this group.
In the other group, which took pomegranate oil daily, the average MMSE score increased by 0.8 points.

Mechanism
In the control group, the concentration of amyloid-beta-40 and phosphorylated tau-181 increased by 11 and 25 percent, respectively. In the supplementation group, these concentrations decreased by 40 and 21 percent.
