Oyster mushroom thwarts prostate cancer

There are indications that a diet with relatively many edible mushrooms reduces the risk of cancer - and therefore also the risk of prostate cancer. If we limit ourselves to prostate cancer, one mushroom is not equivalent to the other. An older in vitro study suggests that oyster mushrooms in particular can protect the prostate against cancer.

Study
In 2006, Yu-Huan Gu, then at Bastyr University, published a test-tube study in which he exposed PC-3 cells to extracts from more than twenty edible mushrooms. All extracts were water-based.

PC-3 cells are of human origin. Oncologists found them in the 1970s in a 67-year-old man with metastatic prostate cancer at an advanced stage. PC-3 cells no longer respond to androgens.

Results
Of all the extracts, those from oyster mushrooms - in Latin Pleurotus ostreatus - seemed to emerge as the best cancer inhibitor. In second place came extracts of Flammulina velutipes.

The cancer-inhibiting effect of oyster mushroom became especially visible at the higher concentrations over a relatively short period of 24 hours. For the record, we are talking about the vitality of individual cells.

More dramatic was the effect of the extracts on the ability of the cancer cells to grow into colonies. Let's say: to form tumors. These tests took 2 weeks to complete.

More dramatic was the effect of the extracts on the ability of the cancer cells to grow into colonies over a two-week period on petri dishes. It became less.

This may mean that oyster mushroom components in the body reduce the ability of prostate cancer cells to develop into tumors.

Especially men who have passed 50 can benefit from that effect.

Meta-study confirms protective effect of edible mushrooms against cancer
If you eat an average of 20 grams of mushrooms such as oyster mushrooms every day, the chance that you will develop cancer is 45 percent smaller than if you never eat edible mushrooms.

Chaga inhibits lung cancer
This is suggested by a Japanese animal study that was published in Helyion in 2016.
