Mass supplementation with vitamin D could have prevented one-third of Covid-19 deaths
If everyone had taken a vitamin D supplement in 2020, when the coronavirus took hold outside of China, significantly fewer people would have died as a result of Covid-19. Of every 3 people who died, one had still been alive, American researchers calculated.
Study
The researchers were able to see if the former soldiers had contracted Covid-19 and if they had died from it. They could also see that about 250,000 veterans were taking vitamin D supplements. The researchers were able to match veterans who used vitamin D with veterans who did not.
This means that for each veteran of the vitamin D group, the researchers were able to designate a veteran with roughly the same traits. In this way, the researchers put together two groups of study participants, who were very similar - of course, apart from using vitamin D.
Results
Vitamin D2 reduced the risk of Covid-19 about as much as vitamin D3.
In this case, too, the protective effect of vitamin D2 was not inferior to that of vitamin D3.
Vitamin D protected both men and women, the researchers found.
The protective effect was greater in veterans with dark skin.
In the year 2020 351,999 Americans died from Covid-19, according to health authorities. If all Americans had taken vitamin D supplements, 116,000 on them might still be alive today.
Conclusion
"Our findings are especially relevant to the US population, given that about half of Americans are estimated to have sub-optimal vitamin D serum levels."
