Combination of vitamin D3, vitamin B12 and magnesium keeps covid patient out of the ICU
The SARS-CoV2 Omicron variant may be less aggressive than its predecessors, but the successor to Omicron may become a more formidable pathogen. Because we are already preparing for the post-Omicron era, we reread a study from 2020, in which supplementation with magnesium and vitamins D3 and B12 reduced the chance that covid patients require oxygen therapy.
Study
Of these, 24 subjects received standard treatment. The 17 remaining subjects were given a daily supplement containing 1000 units of vitamin D3, 150 milligrams of magnesium and 500 micrograms of vitamin B12 from the moment they arrived at the hospital.
The researchers wanted to use this combination to stimulate the subjects' immune systems. Different types of immune cells need vitamin D, magnesium is a cofactor for the conversion of vitamin D3 into its active form. The researchers speculate that vitamin B12 favorably strengthens the gut microbiome. [Cell Metab. 2014 Nov 4; 20(5): 769-78.]
Results
Supplementation, on the other hand, had a positive effect. Supplementation reduced the chance that subjects would eventually need oxygen by more than eighty percent. That was still the case after the researchers adjusted for the effect of age and high blood pressure.
Conclusion
"Nonetheless, this proof-of-principle effort has yielded promising results supporting the benefit of the vitamin D / magnesium / vitamin B12 combination in preventing clinical deterioration in patients at high risk."
"Our findings will need to be further validated in a well-designed randomized controlled trial."
