Do green beans enhance fat loss?
In every store that sells supplements, you will find products with bean extracts that are expected to help you lose weight faster. These products contain substances that inhibit the absorption of carbohydrates. The possible slimming effect of green beans that we are going to bore you with today is of a different nature. At least when it comes to the mechanism of action.
Study
The Chilean biochemist Felipe Castillo, affiliated with the Universidad de Talca, exposed fat cells and fatty tissues from rats to extracts from green beans in test tubes. Castillo had made his own extracts. His research, which appeared in 2019 in the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism, does not tell us much about their bioactive substances.
Results
The extracts stimulated the release of fat from the fat cells, as shown in the figure below. They didn't work as well as isoprenaline [positive control], but they worked. Water-based extracts were just as effective as methanol-based extracts.
Exposure to green bean extract reduced the amount of fat in fat cells, just as you would expect.
Mechanism
Castillo has not investigated how green beans squeeze out fat cells, but he suspects that active substances in beans interact with the 'fat receptor' PPAR-gamma in fat cells.
Conclusion
The concentration Castillo used was high. Anyway, green beans are not poisonous. Whatever the active substances in green beans are, they are probably not dangerous. That opens up perspectives.
Could you lowe your fat percentage faster if you ate beans a few times a week?
