Green Propolis gets covid patient discharged from hospital sooner

Green Propolis - another name for Brazilian Propolis - makes the influenza virus less deadly, according to an animal study we wrote about a few days earlier. Green Propolis may also have an antiviral effect in humans, we tell you today. According to a study that appeared in Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy, short-term supplementation with Green Propolis helps people with Covid-19 get out of the hospital faster.

Study
Brazilian researchers divided 124 hospitalized patients with covid-19 into 3 groups. The subjects in the control group received standard care for 7 days, a second group took 400 milligrams of Green Propolis daily, while a third group took 800 milligrams of Green Propolis daily.

The researchers used the supplement Propomax from the Brazilian company Apis Flora. [apisflora.com.br] The Green Propolis extract was contained in 100 milligram capsules, which the subjects took 4 times a day.

The trial was partly funded by Apis Flora.

Bioactive compounds
In the 400 milligram group, the supplement provided 54 milligrams of phenols per day, half of which consisted of quercetin analogues and other flavonoids. The active substances in Green Propolis contain a number of phenols with a relatively high bioavailability.

A prominent bioactive compound in Green Propolis is the phenol artepillin C. Chemical structure above. According to a Japanese animal study, artepillin C activates T-reg cells. Results
The subjects in the control group had to stay in the hospital for an average of 12.6 days. The 400 milligram group was able to go home on average after 9.5 days, the 800 milligram group after 8.2 days.

And yes, these differences were statistically significant.

Kidney damage occurred less frequently in the subjects in the Green Propolis groups. Of the subjects in the control group, 23.8 percent suffered kidney damage. In the 400 and 800 milligram groups, these were 12.5 and 4.8 percent, respectively.

Conclusion
"Propolis should be considered as an adjuvant in the treatment of covid-19 patients", write the Brazilians.
