Cassia tea against farsightedness

Although cassia tea drinking is hardly common in the West, it is not difficult to find cassia tea products on the web. According to a human study published in Medicina in October 2024, drinking a few cups of cassia tea a day improves your eyes' ability to see things up close.

Cassia tea
Cassia tea or Jue Ming Zi tea is a tea made from the roasted seeds of the plant Senna obtusifolia. You can see this plant below. In Asian countries, traditional healers use cassia tea against constipation, insomnia, fever, headaches and vision problems.

Study
Pharmacologists from Kaohsiung Armed Forces General Hospital in Taiwan divided 120 subjects into four groups. For 6 months, the subjects in the 4 groups drank 500 cc of water containing 1 gram of vitamin C [the control group], 1 cup of cassia tea [low dose group, LDG], 2 cups of cassia tea [middle dose group, MDG] or 3 cups of cassia tea [high dose group, MDG] daily, respectively.

The subjects prepared each cup of cassia tea in the same way. They let 5 grams of roasted cassia seeds steep in 250 milliliters of hot water at 70 degrees.

As the experiment progressed, the subjects in the group that drank 1 cup of cassia tea per day saw better near vision. The improvement was not significant.

The groups that drank 2 or 3 cups of cassia tea per day also saw better near vision. The improvement was statistically significant for them.

Mechanism
The chance of farsightedness - medical term: presbyopia - increases as the lens in the eye can no longer change shape properly with age. The researchers suspect that free radicals damage the lens.

The researchers also suspect that cassia tea reverses the aging of the lens via an antioxidant mechanism. They saw that in vitro cassia tea is a better antioxidant than vitamin C, goji and anthocyanins, but less good than astaxanthin. The researchers also discovered that in the blood of the test subjects who drank 2 cups of cassia tea every day for six months, the concentration of the endogenous antioxidant SOD increased by 84 percent.

Conclusion
"Our findings suggest that regular dietary consumption of cassiae tea significantly benefits individuals with presbyopia and those engaged in near-distance work, such as smartphone users", write the researchers.

"Cassiae tea is a safe, comfortable, non-invasive, and affordable treatment option for managing presbyopia in daily life. Moreover, it may help slow the progression of presbyopia, including smartphone-induced presbyopia, thereby promoting overall ocular health."
