Combination of Mirtogenol and latanoprost drastically decreases interocular pressure

The day before yesterday we wrote about Mirtogenol, a supplement that can reduce increased eye pressure by a few points. In combination with regular medications against increased eye pressure, Mirtogenol works even better, suggests a small and sponsored human study from 2010.

Combination of Mirtogenol and latanoprost drastically decreases interocular pressure

Study
Mirtogenol is a proprietary blend, created by two manufacturers of supplement ingredients. One is Horphag, the producer of Pycnogenol, the other is Indena, the producer of the blueberry extract Mirtoselect. Both extracts are contained in Mirtogenol.

In 2010, researchers from both companies published a trial in Clinical Ophthalmology that lasted almost six months. 40 adults with increased eye pressure served as test subjects.

The researchers divided the subjects into 3 groups.

One group received eye drops containing latanoprost, an analogue of PGF-2-alpha [structural formula below]. Latanoprost increases the drainage of fluid from the eyeball, which reduces eye pressure. Latanoprost is a regular and proven remedy against increased interocular pressure. The subjects injected 1.5 micrograms of latanoprost into each eye every day.

A second group received only Mirtogenol. The test subjects took 120 milligrams of Mirtogenol every day - read: 40 milligrams of Pynogenol and 80 milligrams of Mirtoselect.

A third group dripped with latanoprost and also took Mirtogenol.

Results
Just before the trial started, the subjects had an eye pressure of an average of 38 mmHg.

Mirtogenol reduced intraocular pressure to 33 mmHg. Despite the decrease of 5 points, this was still insufficient.

Latanoprost reduced eye pressure by 11 points to 27 mmHg. Latanoprost performed a lot better than Mirtogenol, but an eye pressure of 27 is still too high.

The combination of latanoprost and Mirtogenol reduced intraocular pressure to 22-23 mmHg. That comes close to the point where ophthalmologists breathe a sigh of relief. According to the researchers, the combination of regular medication and supplement performed significantly better than regular medication alone.

Conclusion
"Serious side-effects have never been reported for Mirtoselect and Pycnogenol, despite their decades-old use in ophthalmology, predominantly for diabetic retinopathy", the researchers summarize.

"While the supplement does not represent a replacement for prostaglandin F 2-alpha analogs, taking the supplement in addition, appears to be safe, and may further contribute to the attainment of healthier interocular pressure values."

"A much larger study with a significant number of patients should further assess the benefits of the supplement for controlling interocular pressure."

Blood pressure drops several points during supplementation with Pycnogenol
According to a Chinese meta-study, Pycnogenol supplementation lowers both diastole and systole blood pressure by more than 3 points.

Vitamin C supplement lowers blood pressure
We recently wrote about the positive effect of magnesium supplementation on blood pressure. Magnesium is not the only supplement that lowers blood pressure.
