Is Camu-Camu a fat loss supplement?
If you know your way around the world of superfoods, you may know Camu-Camu as an excellent source of natural vitamin C. A Belgian animal study suggests that supplementing with Camu-Camu may also help you lose excess fat faster.
Study
Camu-Camu is a fruit from the Brazilian and Peruvian rainforest that has now achieved the status of a superfood. That is not unjustified. Camu-Camu is rich in vitamin C and is also a good source of phenols.
The researchers gave their test animals a low and high dose of Camu-Camu. This post is about the effects of the high dose. The human equivalent of that dose is approximately 1200-1800 milligrams per day. This amounts to three teaspoons.
The researchers used a product from Naturex.
Results
In the fat cells of the fattened mice, Camu-Camu partially restored the bio-synthesis of the enzymes hormone-sensitive lipase [Hsl] and adipose triglyceride lipase [Atgl].
These two enzymes ensure that fat cells can break down stored fat into loose fatty acids and release them into the bloodstream.
Mechanism
This theory was incorrect, the researchers report. Camu-Camu did indeed increase the size of the Akkermansia muciniphila population, but that effect was too small to impact weight, body composition, fat cells, and hormones.
