Study
Researchers at the Prefectural University of Hiroshima divided 53 women aged 66-84 into 2 groups.

For 12 weeks, the women in one group took placebos daily, while the women in the other group took a dose of 227 milligrams of Brazilian propolis twice a day - one dose after breakfast, the other dose after dinner. In total, the women consumed 454 milligrams of Brazilian propolis per day.

The Japanese used Propolis 300, a product from Yamada Bee Farm. The study was funded by both Yamada and the Japanese government.

Results
The women in the placebo group did not lose body fat, but the women in the supplementation group did. Although the fat loss in the women who received Brazilian propolis was only 300 grams, it was statistically significant.

In addition, in the supplementation group, there was a trend that the women gained lean mass.

Mechanism
The researchers found an increase in the concentration of adiponectin in the blood of the women who received Brazilian propolis. This suggests that insulin function improved. Perhaps the supplement allowed the women's muscle cells to absorb more nutrients from the bloodstream.
