Supplementing with vitamin B12 gives vegans a muscular physique

The more vitamin B12 circulates in your body, the more muscle you have. Portuguese biochemists came up with this theory, who otherwise could not explain why Portuguese vegans have as much muscle as omnivores.

Meta-study
Portuguese biochemists at the University of Porto analyzed data from 425 adult Portuguese who participated in the VeggieNutri Cross-Sectional Study. The researchers knew the diet of the study participants and the composition of their bodies. So they knew what percentage of their body consisted of fat or muscle.

Study participants included lacto-ovo vegetarians, vegans and meat eaters. Because meat eaters tend to consume more protein than lacto-ovo vegetarians and vegans, the researchers expected meat eaters to have a higher muscle percentage than the other two groups.

And because vegans usually consume less protein than lacto-ovo vegetarians, the researchers expected also that vegans would have an even lower muscle percentage than lacto-ovo vegetarians.

Results
The researchers discovered that, expressed as a percentage of total body weight, the muscle mass of the study participants with a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet [LOV] was 2.2 percent smaller than the muscle mass of the meat eaters [OMNI].

In addition, the study participants with a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet had a body composition with 4.8 percent more fat mass than the meat eaters.

Both differences were statistically significant. However, among the vegans [VEG], the researchers found no statistically significant differences with the meat eaters in terms of their muscle and fat percentage.

The most striking difference between the diet of the vegans and the diet of the lacto-ovo vegetarians was the supplementation with vitamin B12 supplements. 93 percent of vegans took vitamin B12. Among vegetarians, 59 percent used a vitamin B12 supplement.

Could vitamin B12 supplementation explain why the vegans had relatively high muscle mass? According to the figure below, that might be possible. The more vitamin B12 circulated in the bloodstream of the study participants, the greater their muscle percentage.

Conclusion
"Despite literature pointing out several health benefits of wellplanned vegetarian dietary patterns, these diets may not be associated with better health, anthropometric, and body composition profiles", summarize the Portuguese.

"In the current study, plant-based diets were associated with a lower percentage of muscle mass, which could be induced by lower food protein intake."

"However, the observed lower percentage of muscle mass seemed to be attenuated in vegans, most likely due to B12 supplementation [...]."

"The molecular mechanisms underlying this intricate relationship between micronutrient supplementation and muscle mass deserve to be further explored."

More vitamin B3 gives people over 40 more muscles and less body fat
This is suggested by a Chinese analysis of epidemiological data collected in the United States.

More vitamin C, more muscle
British epidemiologists at Norwich Medical School stumbled upon the association in a study involving 13,000 men and women.

Daily dose of vitamin D keeps over 50s' muscles in shape
People in their 50s who don't do any exercise or physical work lose a little bit of muscle and with it strength as the years pass. Taking a moderate dose of vitamin D3 can stop this process.
