If you've already reached 100 but want to get a little older, what can you do? Making sure you sleep well and experience life as satisfying, American researchers discovered.

Two pieces of advice for over-100s who want to live (even) longer

Study
Researchers from Brigham Young University in the US state of Utah studied the data of 268 residents who lived past the age of 100. The data was collected between 2007 and 2015.

Results
When the researchers brushed out all possible confounding factors and interactions with statistics [in the table below on the right], they found that the 100-plus with the longest lifespan differed in two respects from the 100-plus with shorter lifespans.

One was that the over 100s with the longest life spans fell asleep quickly after getting into bed [Sleep latency]. Their sleep was of good quality. The other point was that ultra agers among the over 100s still found life worth living [Life satisfaction].

The researchers had initially expected that physical health would be a significant factor. For example, they had expected that centenarians would live longer as they used less or more drugs. This was not the case.

Looking down on the elderly raises chance of heart attack
Young people who have a negative attitude towards old people are more likely later in life, when they themselves are grey and wrinkled, to have a stroke or heart attack.

Fit centenarians have high vitamin D levels
A relatively high vitamin D level may enable you to reach a ripe old age and avoid chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes type-2 and cardiovascular disease.

No fear in the face of aging extends life expectancy
The age you are likely to reach doesn't just depend on your genes and your lifestyle. How you feel about aging is also a determining factor in the age you are likely to reach.
