This is how much body fat you can lose by wearing a weighted vest
If you wear a weighted vest for at least 8 hours a day but otherwise do not change your lifestyle, your body will use more energy. So much more energy that your fat mass will shrink.
Study
In 2020, Swedish researchers from the University of Gothenburg published a small human study involving 69 obese subjects with a BMI of 30-35. The subjects wore a weighted vest for at least 8 hours per day for 3 weeks. To be precise, the subjects wore an RF Weightvest from the Swedish Casall.
During the experiment, the subjects did not change their lifestyle.
The Swedes divided their subjects into 2 groups. One group wore a weighted vest with only 1 percent of their body weight [low load]. The other group wore a weighted vest with 11 percent of their body weight [high load].
Results
The loss of body weight and body fat in the low load group was not significant. It was only a few ounces. However, the weight loss in the high load group was of a different order. In this group, there was a loss of body weight and fat mass of one and a half to two kilos.
The Swedes did not find any effects on muscle mass. You should immediately note that the test subjects did not train with a weight vest. If you walk up stairs and down slopes with a weight vest, your muscles will certainly react to that.
Conclusion
Losing one and a half kilos of body fat is of course not that much. But if a. that happens in 3 weeks and b. this fat loss continues at the same rate for a few months, then the story is of course different. In that case, wearing a weighted vest is just as effective as a gastric reduction.
