How does your health improve if you combine intermittent fasting with interval training?
The combination of intermittent fasting and interval training is an effective way to make overweight people leaner and healthier. This is apparent from a human study published in Cell Metabolism.
Study
During 7 weeks of the experiment, nothing happened to the women in the control group [CON].
A second group practiced intermittent fasting and ate only during a 10 hours time frame [TRE].
A third group did interval training on a treadmill [HIIT] three times a week.
Two of the three workouts consisted of 4 4-minute bouts, in which the subjects exercised at 90-95 percent of their maximum heart rate. Between bouts, the women moved at a moderate intensity for 3 minutes.
A third workout consisted of 10 1-minute bouts of exercise at more than 90 percent of maximum heart rate. Between bouts, the women moved at moderate intensity for 1 minute.
The interval workouts started with a 10-minute warm-up and ended with a 3-minute cool-down.
A fourth group combined intermittent fasting with interval training [TREHIIIT].
Results
The combination of intermittent fasting and interval training also resulted in a greater decrease in fat mass than intermittent fasting or interval training alone.
Intermittent fasting reduced muscle mass a bit. In the group that combined intermittent fasting with interval training, the decrease in muscle mass was not statistically significant.
