Supplementing with magnesium makes NO boosters work better

Athletes who use nitrates or NO-boosters to improve their performance may get more out of those products if they combine them with an inexpensive magnesium oxide supplement.

Meta-study
Italian geriatricians at the University of Palermo traced 17 previously published trials in the scientific literature in which a total of 889 subjects had been supplemented with magnesium, and in which researchers subsequently determined the effect of magnesium on markers of inflammation.

Results
Magnesium supplementation increased the concentration of nitric oxide in the blood. This is evident from the three studies in which researchers looked at the effect of magnesium on nitric oxide. In all studies, subjects had received 250 milligrams of magnesium oxide daily.

The Italians also found an effect on the inflammatory factor CRP. Magnesium supplementation decreased the activity of CRP. That is probably positive. CRP often plays a negative role in chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer.

Magnesium supplementation had no significant effect on other relevant markers, such as MDA, TNF-alpha and Interleukin-6.

Conclusion
The Italians suspected that supplementation with magnesium is especially interesting for patients with cardiovascular disorders. An increased activity of NO makes blood vessels more flexible, due to a decrease in CRP activity, the inflammatory processes that damage blood vessels reduce.

"Considering the presence of inconsistent but potentially useful data regarding magnesium supplementation, further studies are desirable to corroborate and better clarify these findings", the Italians write.

Does it make sense to combine beet root and citrulline?
Yes, that does make sense. At least if you want to increase your endurance performance.

Why supplementation with sterols is still interesting for athletes
The chemical structure of sterols is similar to that of testosterone. That's why some companies claim sterols imitate the effect of testosterone and accelerate muscle growth. That's not the case, of course. But...
