Paleo diet reduces breast cancer risk
The more women's diets resemble the diets that kept people alive before the rise of agriculture and the food industry, the lower their risk of breast cancer.
Study
Between 1993 and 2014, epidemiologists at Paris-Sud University followed almost seventy thousand healthy post-menopausal women. Because the women had completed questionnaires, the researchers had an idea of the women's diets.
In their study that was published in 2023 in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the researchers looked at the effect of the paleo diet on breast cancer. So they kept track of whether the women developed breast cancer and whether a diet close to the paleo diet could protect against this.
The table below explains how the researchers defined the paleo diet.
Results
Women with a diet that closely resembled the paleo diet had a 17 percent lower risk of breast cancer than women with an industrial diet. The table below tells you this.

When the researchers broke down their data by different types of breast cancer, they saw that a paleo diet protected against breast cancer types that were sensitive to estradiol - tumors with an estradiol receptor [Er].
If you read what we wrote in 2019 about the estrogenic effect of AGEs in food, you may get an idea of the mechanisms behind the associaton.
Conclusion
"These findings support the long-term healthful influence of the paleo diet, based on lean meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, and nuts, with the limitation of dairy, grains, legumes, refined sugar, and alcohol", the researchers conclude.
