Organic food protects against atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases

The more of the food you eat every day is organically produced, the lower your chances of ending up in hospital due to cardiovascular disease, according to a Danish epidemiological study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.

Organic food protects against atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases

Study
Researchers from the Danish Cancer Institute analyzed data from 41,407 Danes who participated in the Danish Diet, Cancer, and Health study from the mid-1990s onwards. The study participants were healthy and aged 55-64 when the study began. The researchers were able to follow the participants for 16 years.

The researchers had an idea of the diet of the Danes and were able to give a score to the proportion of organic foods. The lowest score was 6, the highest 24.

The researchers then investigated whether and when the study participants first reported to the hospital with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. This included vascular diseases, heart attacks, and strokes.

Results
More organic food meant less chance of cardiovascular disease. Compared with study participants who did not consume any organic products at all, men and women with the highest intake of organic food had about a 20 percent lower risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

The researchers polished away the influence of other lifestyle factors as best they could.

Among males aged 70 and over who never used organic products, the chance of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease was 9.5 percent. A high consumption of organic foods reduced that to 8.5 percent. Among females aged 70 and over, these numbers were 4.5 and 3.1 percent respectively.
