L-Arginine | A reduction in blood pressure for everyone
L-arginine supplementation lowers blood pressure. For an ordinary supplement that you can buy in any vitamin shop, the effect is surprisingly large. In addition, according to a meta-study from 2022, the supplement should be effective in practically everyone.
Meta-study
Researchers from the nutrition group of Tehran University of Medical Sciences in Iran collected 22 previously published trials in the scientific literature in which subjects had been given L-arginine supplements and the effect on blood pressure was then recorded. The researchers aggregated the results of the trials and analyzed them again.
Results
L-arginine supplementation reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure by 6.4 and 2.6 points, respectively. That is what the figures below tell you. Click on them for a larger version.
Previously published meta-studies also concluded that L-arginine supplementation lowers blood pressure. What this meta-study adds to these is the confirmation that L-arginine seems to work in all categories of humans. Whether your blood pressure is high or low, whether you are healthy or unhealthy, whether you have a high BMI or not, arginine supplementation will lower your blood pressure.
The duration of the trial was not a major factor in the effectiveness, the dosage was. You have to use 4 grams of arginine per day or more to see an effect. At doses of more than 9 grams per day, arginine's antihypertensive effect disappeared.
