Krill oil reduces muscle loss during strict dieting to (almost) zero
If you follow a strict diet for a few months, supplementing with krill oil can reduce muscle loss to almost zero. This is according to a British human study published in Obesity.
Study
The supplement provided 764 milligrams of EPA, 376 milligrams of DHA, 312 milligrams of choline, and 400 micrograms of astaxanthin daily. The subjects in the experimental group took half of the supplement with lunch and the other half with dinner. The supplement was manufactured by Aker BioMarine Human Ingredients AS. This company funded previous studies by this group - but not this one.
In the last eight weeks of the experiment, all the subjects went on a diet. This meant that one day they could eat as much as they wanted and the next day they had to make do with a modest meal of only 500 calories.
Results
Supplementation did affect the nature of the weight loss. In the placebo group, subjects lost an average of 1.2 kg of lean body mass (mostly muscle mass). The experimental group, on the other hand, retained their lean body mass.

Systolic blood pressure decreased in both groups, but the decrease was greater in the experimental group.
Mechanism
The researchers also refer to other studies - which this web magazine has written about before. In those studies, researchers speculate about a direct anabolic effect of omega-3 fatty acids and a stimulating effect of omega-3 fatty acids on mitochondria.
