Grape Seed Extract increases endurance in athletes during high-intensity exercise
Athletes who take a daily capsule with 300 milligrams of Grape Seed Extract can sustain high-intensity efforts for longer. Supplementation with Grape Seed Extract makes the body more economical with oxygen during strenuous exercise.
Study
Hosung Nho, a sports scientist affiliated with Suwon Women's University in South Korea, had a dozen well-trained basketball players cycle until exhaustion on a number of occasions. This happened on one occasion at 50 percent of the maximum oxygen uptake, on another occasion at 80 percent of the maximum oxygen uptake and on another occasion at 120 percent of the maximum oxygen uptake.
Nho performed the procedures once after the athletes had taken a placebo every day for 2 weeks, and once after the subjects had taken a capsule containing 300 milligrams of Grape Seed Extract daily.
The athletes received Meganatural BP, a product of the American company Polyphenolics. It consists of 95 percent polyphenolic compounds from Grape Seed Extract.
Results
Grape Seed Extract had no effect on the lungs' ability to absorb oxygen. However, supplementation did reduce the amount of oxygen the athletes needed when cycling at an intensity of 80 and 120 percent of their maximum oxygen uptake. Under the latter and supramaximal conditions, Grape Seed Extract increased the time to exhaustion by 4 percent.

Mechanism
When the Koreans measured how much wider the subjects' blood vessels could become after they had been occluded for a short time and the tissues had been deprived of oxygen, they saw that supplementation with Grape Seed Extract significantly increased the ability of the blood vessels to dilate.
Conclusion
"Dietary supplementation with Grape Seed Extract enhanced exercise performance and endothelial function in collegiate basketball players", the Koreans summarize.
"In consequence, the onset of muscle fatigue may be delayed in athletes performing exercise for longer periods of time."
"Findings suggest that a small dosage of Grape Seed Extract supplementation can act as an ergogenic aid capable of enhancing O2 delivery and endurance performance."
