Fish keeps you fit after the age of 65

Not only nuts protect people over sixty against fraility. A diet with relatively much fish has a similar effect.

Study
Epidemiologists from the University of Oslo collected data from 4,350 Norwegians who had participated in the Tromso study between 1994 and 2016. In the Tromso project, researchers monitor the health of thousands of Norwegians - and try to find out whether there are associations between health and lifestyle.

In 2016, all study participants were over 65.

In their article published in BMC Geriatrics, epidemiologists from the University of Oslo investigated whether study participants who had frequently eaten fish during the study were less likely to be pre-frail in 2016. In previous posts we wrote that lifestyle factors such as frequent consumption of nuts, the use of olive oil, a lot of physical activity, a high intake of proteins and antioxidants and a high intake of vegetables reduce the risk of frailty. The researchers wondered whether fish consumption also belonged in this list.

Results
In 2016, 28 percent of study participants showed the first symptoms of frailty. A relatively high intake of fish reduced the risk of this by several tens of percent, as shown in the table below. Click on it for a larger version.

The study participants who consistently ate a lot of fish were 41 percent less likely to be pre-frail as people over 65. Both oily fish and lean fish protected against fragility.

Mechanism
The researchers write that fish is a good dietary source of protein to begin with. Fish also contains vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. These factors may explain the protective effect of fish, the researchers suspect.
