As the years go by, the elderly may lose their ability to absorb and recover from illness. Their physical resilience reduces and they become fragile. According to a Chinese epidemiological analysis of data collected in America, nuts may help prevent frailty.

Study
Researchers at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine analyzed data from 10,033 Americans over the age of 60 who had participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) in 2003-2018.

Based on the questionnaires that the participants had completed, the researchers had an idea of ‚Äč‚Äčtheir diet. The researchers knew approximately how many nuts the study participants ate. By the way, they included not only nuts that grow on trees, but also peanuts, seeds such as flax seed, sesame seed and pumpkin seed and products made from them, such as peanut butter and sesame paste.

A bit of an unnecessarily broad definition, if you ask us. But we'll have to make do with it.

Results
36 percent of the study participants were frail to a greater or lesser extent. If the study participants ate 34 grams of nuts or seeds daily, the chance of this was 30 percent smaller. 34 grams equates to a handful.

Mechanism
Nuts and seeds are a good source of vitamin E, but also provide magnesium, polyphenols, vegetable proteins and unsaturated fatty acids. Together, these components may inhibit aging, the researchers suggest.
