Elderberry extract helps you get over the flu sooner
If you have the flu, supplementation with an elderberry extract will help you get back to your old self more quickly. This is suggested by an older small trial published in the Journal of International Medical Research.
Study
During the 1999-2000 flu season, the test subjects had become ill - according to analyzes of their saliva after infection with the flu viruses influenza A and B.
Immediately after they stopped feeling well, half of the subjects started taking a placebo syrup for 5 days. The other half used a syrup with elderberry extract. The subjects took 15 milliliters of syrup 4 times a day.
The subjects in the experimental group used a product marketed as Sambucol. Sambucol contains cyanidin-3-glucoside, cyanidin-3-sambubioside and other phenols that make it difficult for viruses to enter cells and stimulate the immune system to eliminate infected cells.
The producer of Sambucol, Israel's Razei Bar, sponsored the study.
Results
Supplementation with liquid elderberry extract improved almost all aspects of flu, as shown in the table above. Click on it for a larger version. Pain, coughing, poor sleep, nasal congestion - in the experimental group it disappeared faster.
The researchers also looked at the use of flu medication. The test subjects could decide for themselves whether they took it.
The need for medication was less in the experimental group.
Conclusion
"It should be stressed that our study involved only adult influenza patients who were otherwise healthy, and did not include any high-risk patients."
