Decaf increases the risk of rheumatoid arthritis, regular coffee does not
Contrary to what some rheumatologists have said, drinking coffee does not increase the risk of rheumatoid arthritis. However, according to a meta-study published in Frontiers in Nutrition, there is an association between decaf and rheumatism.
Study
Results
When the researchers distinguished between regular coffee (with caffeine) and decaf (coffee where the manufacturer had removed the caffeine from the coffee with all sorts of solvents), it turned out that all consumption of decaf increased the risk of rheumatism. This happened with a consumption of more than 2-3 cups per day.
Mechanism
"Chronic ingestion of solvent residues, even small quantities, could result in connective tissue disorders such as scleroderma, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis." [Arthritis Res. 2000;2(1):5-15.]
