A combination of tea and coffee protects even better against dementia

This site has reported more than once about the positive biological effects of both coffee and tea on the cardiovascular system and the brain. Thanks to Chinese epidemiologists who analyzed British data, we now know that the positive health effects of coffee and tea reinforce each other.

Study
Epidemiologists from Tianjin Medical University in Taiwan analyzed data from 365,682 British over-50s that UK Biobank researchers followed from 2006-2010 to 2020.

The researchers had a notion of their subjects' daily consumption of coffee and tea. They also knew which study participants had a stroke or developed dementia.

In their study, the researchers tried to find out whether there was an association between these two groups of parameters.

Results
After brushing out the impact of other lifestyle factors to the best of their ability, the researchers saw that the study participants who drank 2-3 cups of tea or 2-3 cups of coffee daily were less likely to develop stroke and dementia than study participants who did not consume tea or coffee.

With a higher intake than 2-3 cups per day, the positive effects of both tea and coffee became less.

The combination of coffee and tea provided even better protection. The study participants who drank 3-6 cups of coffee and tea daily had a 32 percent lower risk of stroke and a 28 percent lower risk of dementia, respectively, than study participants who did not drink coffee or tea. They were even 48 percent less likely to develop dementia after a stroke.

Conclusion
"Drinking coffee and tea separately or in combination were associated with lower risk of stroke and dementia", the researchers summarize.

"Moreover, drinking coffee alone or in combination with tea was associated with lower risk of poststroke dementia."

"Our findings support an association between moderate coffee and tea consumption and risk of stroke and dementia. However, whether the provision of such information can improve stroke and dementia outcomes remains to be determined."
