Trial (not kidding) | Prunes make you p**p more
When we wrote a post a few days ago about the positive effects of prunes on bone mass, alert readers informed us that the addition of prunes to the diet also leads to an increase in solid stools. They were not imagining anything, according to a trial that British researchers published in Clinical Nutrition in 2019.
Study
Researchers from King's College London divided 120 subjects aged 18-65 into 3 groups. For 9 weeks, the subjects in one group ate 80 grams of dried plums every day, while the subjects in the other group ate 120 grams of prunes every day. A dried plum weighs about 10 grams.
Subjects in the control group did not eat prunes.
Results
The addition of 80 grams of dried plums to the diet increased the amount of solid stool per day by 22 grams per day. A daily portion of 120 grams of dried plums resulted in an increase of 33 grams.
In the table above - click on it for a larger version - you can see that the number of times the subjects had to visit the toilet for solid stool deposition increased by 1-2 visits per week.
The consistency of the stools did not change.
Mechanism
"The mechanisms through which fibre impacts on stool weight and frequency are thought to include an increase in non-digestible, non-fermentable bulk in the colon which has a greater water-holding capacity", write the researchers.
