Getting enough selenium slows down the rate of your aging

If you get enough selenium - which isn't a given in most countries - you age more slowly than if your intake is too low. This is suggested by a German molecular epidemiological study published in Clinical Epigenetics.

Getting enough selenium slows down the rate of your aging

Study
Researchers at Charité University Berlin analyzed data from 1,671 people over 60 who participated in the Berlin Aging Study II. The researchers had data on the concentration of selenium proteins in the participants' blood and analyses of white blood cells.

The researchers excluded users of selenium supplements from their study.

These white blood cell analyses focused on the methylation of genes in the DNA of those cells. The more a cell ages, the more methyl groups are attached to these genes. They often no longer function properly.

The researchers used various computational models to express the methylated genes in aging. These models have names such as DunedinPace, Horvath, Hannum, PhenoAge, GrimAge, and 7-CpG. Scientists prefer to call these computational models epigenetic clocks.

Results
The researchers found a correlation between the concentration of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase-3 (GPX3) in the blood and the score on the DunedinPace model. The spatial structure of GPX3 is shown below.

Half a dozen versions of GPX3 are known, but GPX3 is primarily found in the blood. Based on GPX3 concentration, the researchers divided their participants into four equal-sized groups [Q1, the group with the lowest concentration, Q2, Q3, and Q4, the group with the highest concentration].

The DunedinPace model is a third-generation epigenetic clock. It was created by an AI that linked methylated genes to symptoms of aging, such as tooth loss, decreased lung function and muscle strength, and cognitive decline.

The figure below shows that a higher GPX3 concentration is associated with slower aging according to the DunedinPace epigenetic clock—not according to other clocks. Click on it for a larger version.

The DunedinPace clock indicates the rate at which someone ages. The lower your score, the slower your aging.

If we do a calculation that's not entirely consistent with the rules, someone who has had a good selenium status for 30 years [Q4] would be 1.1 years younger biologically than someone who has had a poor selenium status for 30 years [Q1].

Conclusion
"These results support previous findings that suggest health benefits of sufficient selenium levels", the researchers summarize. "Randomized controlled trials are needed to evaluate the potential therapeutic benefit of selenium supplementation and its effect on biological age acceleration."

Iodine deficiency threatens vegetarian thyroid Selenium increases chance of survival after infection with coronavirus Selenium helps maintain the muscle strength of the over-eighties

Iodine deficiency threatens vegetarian thyroid
Cutting meat from your diet increases your risk of developing an underactive thyroid, or hypothyroidism. Eliminating meat reduces iodine intake. And selenium intake, for that matter.

Selenium increases chance of survival after infection with coronavirus
A diet with a relatively large amount of fish from the sea, Brazil nuts and other sources of selenium may enhance recovery after infection with the coronavirus.

Selenium helps maintain the muscle strength of the over-eighties
A diet with enough selenium can help you maintain your muscle strength as the years go by.
