Schisandra chinensis increases muscle strength by 8 percent
You do not work out with weights, but you do take one gram of Schisandra chinensis extract every day. According to a study by Dong-A University in South Korea, your muscle strength has increased by 7.7 percent within 12 weeks.
The researchers divided 45 healthy women aged 55-78 into 2 groups. The researchers gave half of their subjects a total of one gram of Schisandra chinensis extract every day for 12 weeks. This dose was in 4 capsules. The subjects divided this into two intakes every day. The other half received capsules without active substances during that period.
Before and after the supplementation period, the researchers determined the strength that the women could develop on a leg extension machine.
Supplementation increased muscle strength by 7.7 percent.
The researchers saw nothing happening in the women's blood, except that the concentration of lactic acid decreased slightly.
"Our results illustrate the potential of Schisandra chinensis extract supplementation in the prevention of declining muscle strength", the researchers write. "Further studies are required to cement this link and investigate whether this influences physical performance."
