Pycnogenol increases hair density

Pycnogenol, an extract from the bark of the Mediterranean pine tree Pinus pinaster, increases the number of hairs per square centimeter of scalp. This is shown by a sponsored human study, in which 76 postmenopausal women participated as test subjects.

Pycnogenol increases hair density

Study
Researchers from the Chinese Intertek Testing Services in Shanghai divided 76 women aged 45-60 into 2 groups. The women in one group took 150 milligrams of Pycnogenol daily for six months. The women took a tablet containing 50 milligrams 3 times a day with a meal.

Pycnogenol is a Horphag product. Horphag paid for the study.

The women in the other group took a placebo.

Results
On the heads of the women in the experimental group, the number of hairs per square centimeter increased. After 2 months, hair density had increased by 30 percent.

Thereafter, the hair density in this group did not increase any further. After 6 months, hair density had increased by 23 percent compared to the start of the study.

Hair density did not change in the placebo group.

Mechanism
The researchers found evidence that Pycnogenol made the women's skin healthier, probably through an improvement in skin microcirculation. The increase in hair density may have been due to an improved supply of nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicles, the researchers write.
