Probiotic bacteria Bifidobacterium longum OLP-01 makes well-trained runners even faster
A few years ago, microbiologists in Taiwan discovered a bacterium that could make mice more muscular, leaner, fitter and stronger. The thing was called Bifidobacterium longum OLP-01. Today we read - somewhat belatedly, we admit - a human study in which trained runners were given supplements with that probiotic. Their scores on the good old Cooper test improved as a result.
Studie
The researchers divided their subjects into 2 groups, a placebo group and an experimental group. The subjects in the latter group took a capsule with 5 x 10-9 colony forming units OLP-01 with three meals a day. In total, the subjects consumed 15 x 10-9 colony forming units OLP-01 per day.
Before the supplementation started and on the last day, the researchers tested the fitness of the subjects with the Cooper test. In simple terms, this means that the subjects had to run as far as possible for 12 minutes.
Results
The researchers found no indications of adverse effects of supplementation.
Conclusion
"OLP-01 can be used as a sports nutrition supplement, especially for athletes, to improve exercise performance." Source: More: Archives:
