PEA reduces neuropathic pain in diabetes

A daily dose of 600 milligrams of PEA reduces the neuropathic pain that blights the lives of type 1 and type 2 diabetics. This dose amounts to 2 capsules per day.

PEA reduces neuropathic pain in diabetes

Study
Australian researchers at the University of Queensland divided 70 adult diabetics with neuropathic pain into two groups. For 8 weeks, the subjects in the control group received a placebo every day, while the subjects in the other group received 600 milligrams of PEA daily. The test subjects took a capsule containing 300 milligrams of PEA twice a day.

The researchers received their funding from Gencor Pacific, a manufacturer of supplements containing PEA.

When diabetics have neuropathic pain, their disease affects nerve pathways. This causes pain. The researchers suspected that PEA protects nerve pathways against diabetes.

Results
PEA supplementation reduced neuropathic pain. The effect was significant, as you can see in the figure below. Especially if you click on it and the larger version pops up.

In addition, PEA made the test subjects' mood a little sunnier. Based on previously published studies, the researchers actually expected this. [Pharmacol Rep. 2011;63(3):834-9.]

Conclusion
""Further studies on the mechanistic effectiveness of PEA as an adjunct medicine and as a monotherapy pain analgesic are warranted", the researchers summarize.
