Overactive bladder? Maybe you're getting too much caffeine

If people over 60 have to urinate annoyingly often, this doesn't necessarily mean they have an overactive bladder or, if we're talking about men, an enlarged prostate. Maybe they just need to cut back on their caffeine intake.

Overactive bladder? Maybe you're getting too much caffeine

Study
Russian urologists from the Far Eastern Federal University studied 1,098 healthy people over the age of 60 who were undergoing their annual check-up. The study participants had not been officially diagnosed with overactive bladder.

Using questionnaires, the researchers measured how much caffeine the study participants consumed daily through products such as coffee and tea. They also asked how often the study participants had to urinate daily.

Results
The average study participant in the group with the highest caffeine intake - more than 300 milligrams per day - had to urinate significantly more often than the average study participant in the lower intake groups.

In the group with caffeine intakes of more than 300 milligrams per day, 20 percent of the study participants had "severe symptoms" of overactive bladder. In the other groups, this was about 10 percent.

Conclusion
"A higher level of daily caffeine intake causes an increase in frequency of overactive bladder symptoms and is likely to be a risk factor for overactive bladder emergence", the researchers summarize.

"The average number of overactive bladder symptoms in people who consume less caffeine per day does not differ from that in healthy people."
