High blood pressure? Supplementation with olive leaf extract reduces the risk of a heart attack
Supplementation with olive leaf extract lowers systolic blood pressure and blood triglyceride concentrations. According to a meta-study published in Diabetology & Metabolic Syndrome, people with hypertension in particular may benefit from these effects.
Study
Most trials involved capsules, which had provided 500-100 milligrams of extract daily. The concentration of oleuropein, perhaps the most important active ingredient in olive leaf extract, varied from 16-40 percent.
The researchers looked at the cardiological effects of supplementation - on cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, inflammatory proteins and glucose.
Results
Of course, a reduction in triglyceride concentration means that cardiovascular health improves. But only the reduction in systolic blood pressure was clinically relevant, the Iranians write.
In hypertension, a reduction in the upper pressure of 5 mmHg can reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes by 10 percent.
