High blood pressure? Supplementation with olive leaf extract reduces the risk of a heart attack

Supplementation with olive leaf extract lowers systolic blood pressure and blood triglyceride concentrations. According to a meta-study published in Diabetology & Metabolic Syndrome, people with hypertension in particular may benefit from these effects.

Study
In 2022, a meta-study was published, for which Iranian cardiologists combined and reanalyzed the results of 12 previously published trials. In those trials, subjects had taken a supplement with olive leaf extract daily for 6-48 weeks.

Most trials involved capsules, which had provided 500-100 milligrams of extract daily. The concentration of oleuropein, perhaps the most important active ingredient in olive leaf extract, varied from 16-40 percent.

The researchers looked at the cardiological effects of supplementation - on cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure, inflammatory proteins and glucose.

Results
Supplementation had no statistically significant effect on most values - but it did have an effect on systolic blood pressure or top pressure and triglyceride concentration. These decreased by 3.9 mmHg and 9.5 milligrams per deciliter, respectively.

Some of the 819 subjects in the trials used had high blood pressure. In that subgroup, the effects were slightly greater. In the hypertensives, systolic blood pressure and triglyceride concentration decreased by 4.8 mmHg and 14.4 milligrams per deciliter, respectively.

Of course, a reduction in triglyceride concentration means that cardiovascular health improves. But only the reduction in systolic blood pressure was clinically relevant, the Iranians write.

In hypertension, a reduction in the upper pressure of 5 mmHg can reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes by 10 percent.
