Natural eggshell membrane (NEM) | Working out while protecting your joints

You want to work out, but you wonder if that is good for your joints. According to a study conducted by researchers at ESM Technologies, a supplement manufacturer, natural eggshell membrane supplementation can prevent an exercise program from being detrimental to your joints.

Study
The researchers divided 60 women aged 44-70 into 2 groups. All women trained their legs on a step every other day. During the 2 weeks of the experiment, the women increased their training intensity with each workout by increasing the number of step-ups.

Half of the women took a placebo during the experiment. The researchers gave the subjects in the experimental group 500 milligrams of hydrolyzed eggshell membrane, which is on the market as natural eggshell membrane or NEM.

NEM contains collagens, hyaluronic acid and several hundred different proteins. The manufacturer of NEM, the American ESM Technologies, paid for the study.

Results
The supplement reduced joint pain during and 12 hours after the workout. NEM also reduced stiffness. The users experienced this effect both during and after the workout.

During the experiment, the concentration of C-terminal cross-linked telopeptide of type-II collagen increased in the urine of subjects in the placebo group. The more C-terminal cross-linked telopeptide of type-II collagen is in the urine, the more cartilage the body breaks down.

However, the concentration of C-terminal cross-linked telopeptide of type-II collagen decreased in the urine of the subjects in the experimental group.

Conclusion
"The beneficial effects of natural eggshell membrane versus placebo in exercise-induced joint pain, stiffness, and cartilage turnover described here for the first time in healthy, postmenopausal women should help women of this age group to stay active and maintain healthy joints as they age", write the researchers.

"The ability to recover quickly from exercise-induced discomfort (both pain and stiffness) could lead to more frequent exercise and may ultimately reduce the rate of exercise discontinuation."

"Although not a sensory response, the knowledge that one's joint cartilage is also being protected from damage due to exercise should further improve one's inclination to exercise and continue exercising."

MSM reduces pain in muscles and joints after half-marathon
Athletes who daily use 3 grams of MSM experience less pain in their muscles and joints the first two days after they have run a half marathon.

Q10 may protect cartilage in the spine against decay
Intervertebral discs consist of cartilage, are located between the vertebrae and allow the spine to move. Many serious back problems arise because these intervertebral discs are worn or damaged.

Pycnogenol, the vegetable lubricant for worn joints
Slightly worn, stiff and painful joints function noticeably better due to supplementation with 150 milligrams of Pycnogenol per day.
