Monolaurin protects against covid

The blood of people who use coconut oil contains relatively high levels of monolaurin, a substance that is created by converting fats with lauric acid. Laric acid is a prominent fatty acid in coconut oil. According to an Italian study published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, high levels of monolaurin protect against covid.

Monolaurin
Monolaurin is a metabolite of a fat molecule such as you can find in coconut oil. Fats are triglycerides. They consist of three strings - the fatty acids - that are attached to a small linking pin - glycerol. Monolaurin consists of a glycerol globule to which only a lauric fatty acid string is attached. On this page you can see the structural formulas of two variants of monolaurin, 1-monolaurin and 2-monolaurin.

Monolaurin has a bactericidal [J Chiropr Med. 2020 Sep 3;18(4):305-10.] and antiviral effect. [Food Res. 2020;4:2355.] The substance penetrates the envelope of viruses and disables them.

During the corona crisis, doctors have sometimes suggested using supplements with monolaurin against covid.

Study
Researchers from the Universita del Piemonte Orientale measured the concentration of monolaurin in the blood of a thousand nurses and doctors in a hospital during the corona crisis. They then followed the study participants for 6 months. They recorded which of them got covid - and whether there was an association with the concentration of monolaurin.

Results
In the study participants with more than 0.45 micrograms of monolaurin per milliliter of blood, the risk of covid was significantly lower than in the participants with less monolaurin in the blood.

In the group with relatively little monalaurin in the blood, the risk of covid was more than a factor of 3 greater than in the group with relatively much monolaurin in the blood.

Conclusion
"Higher serum monolaurin levels appear to be associated with a reduced risk of COVID-19, suggesting its potential as a protective dietary supplement against SARS-CoV-2 infection," the Italians summarize.

Monolaurin has been on the market as a supplement for years. We have searched in vain for studies that tell us how high your monolaurin level can be by using these supplements.

This is suggested by an in vitro study published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences.

Chaga inhibits SARS-CoV-2 replication in lungs | Animal study
If SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19, ever returns in a highly virulent form, in addition to supplementation with vitamin D, zinc, quercetin and vitamin C, supplementation with Chaga may provide protection.
