The results of the largest study among steroids users ever
Endocrinologists at Wake Forest University in the US have published the largest survey of steroids users ever. As many as 2385 men participated in the study, which will soon appear in the in the American Journal of Men's Health.
The researchers collected their data between August 2019 and April 2020 via internet applications. More than half of the participants were from the United States, and their average age was 31. The main motivations for use were the desire to enhance their physique, become stronger and gain more self-esteem.
Yes, that may all sound familiar. But the research also uncovered some things that may be less obvious.
#1 Almost half of the users has tried to stop
46.2 percent of the study participants have tried to quit. Out of every 10 users who try to quit, 4 were succesful, and 6 were not.
#2 Willing to stop
74.7 percent of the study participants are convinced that it is possible to use steroids for a longer period of time without endangering their health. Should a health problem come to light that would make juicing dangerous, 86.7 percent of users would be willing to stop.
#3 Gurus know better
Steroid users have more confidence in the steroids articles they read in bodybuilding magazines than in the advice given by doctors. They have even more confidence in the knowledge they find on internet forums. The greatest experts in this field are, according to the users at least, the steroid gurus.
#4 Steroid users keep their mouths shut
More than half of steroids users keep their mouths shut about use in discussions with a doctor. The main reason for this is that users expect that users will not be treated fairly by doctors.
And according to most users who are honest with their doctors, those reluctant users are right. 55.3 percent of users who inform doctors about their steroid use indicate that they experience the negative consequences of their openness, and are stigmatised.
#5 Testosterone is the most popular anabolic steroid
Testosterone enanthate and testosterone cypionate are the two most used anabolic steroids. At number three, four and five in the Anabolics Top 5 are methandrostenolone, trenbolone and oxandrolone respectively.
#6 Anastrozole most commonly used anti-estrogen during a cycle
And tamoxifen comes second. On the other hand, tamoxifen is the most commonly used anti-estrogen off-cycle. Click on the figure below for a larger version.
"Our updated data on attitudes and behavior of men using anabolic steroids should serve to reinforce previous calls to action for further research on the treatment of anabolic steroids use disorder", write the researchers.
"Our findings suggest the broad distrust of health-care providers will make recruitment for such studies increasingly difficult. Therefore, as a first step, medical education should emphasize the importance of an informed, nonjudgmental, and harm-mitigation approach to these patients."
