Fish oil supplements reduce the risk of post-Covid-19 residual symptoms

Fish oil supplements reduce the risk of unpleasant and lingering symptoms that can arise after recovery from a Covid-19 infection. This is suggested by an epidemiological study from Taiwan. After recovery from an infection with SARS-CoV-2, fish oil users are less likely to experience residual symptoms such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, muscle pain and coughing.

Study
Researchers from Taiwan's Chi Mei Medical Center collected data from 16,962 patients with Covid-19 via the TriNetX network. This is an electronic system in which 120 academic hospitals worldwide record anonymized patient data. The patients had in common that they had used fish oil supplements in the six months preceding their infection with SARS-CoV-2.

The system also contained the data of 2,248,803 patients who had also had Covid-19, but had not used fish oil. From this group, the Taiwanese put together a control group of 16,962 patients who resembled the supplement users as much as possible. They looked at obvious factors such as age, sex, income and underlying disease.

The researchers then looked at the chance of lingering complaints in the year after the body has cleared the infection with SARS-CoV-2.

Results
Of the patients who had not used fish oil, about 9 percent reported residual psychological symptoms such as depression, anxiety and insomnia. This was 7 percent among patients who had used fish oil.

Fish oil supplementation also reduced the risk of long-term complaints such as muscle pain and coughing.

When the Taiwanese determined which groups supplementation with fish oil seemed to have an effect on and which did not, they discovered that age and vaccination played a role. The indications that fish oil reduced complaints were especially stronger in people under 60 and patients who had not been vaccinated or had only been vaccinated once.

Conclusion
“These findings suggest the need for further investigation through placebo-controlled clinical trials to assess the potential of omega-3 PUFAs as a preventive approach to mitigate adverse mental health outcomes in the post-acute phase of COVID-19,” the researchers conclude.

Covid patients recover faster with quercetin phytosome supplementation
Quercetin in itself probably already has an antiviral effect, and that may be even more true for forms of quercetin with an increased bioavailability.
