Diabetic foot ulcers may heal faster with magnesium supplementation
Not only vitamin C supplementation may accelerate the healing of diabetic foot ulcers. According to a - not entirely uncontroversial - trial from 2018, supplementation with magnesium may have the same effect.
Study
The researchers used a supplement from the American 21st Century Pharmaceutical Company. By the way, the product also contains a negligible amount of calcium.
In 2020, the editors of Biological Trace Element Research announced that questions had arisen about 'the integrity of the clinical trial reported here'. The Iranian National Committee for Ethics in Biomedical Researches was reviewing the research, the editors wrote. Because there has been no clarity for four years now, we decided to write a post about this trial.
Regardless of the outcome of this inquiry, there are indications that magnesium does play a role in the healing of diabetic foot ulcers. In epidemiological studies, researchers find a lower concentration of magnesium in the blood of patients with foot ulcers. Results
Mechanism
The researchers suspect that all these factors together led to accelerated healing of foot ulcers.
